For the last year or so I’ve been using an old Linksys WRT54G router running the open-source DD-WRT software. This was particularly useful when it was operating as a wireless repeater, but it hasn’t done too well as a stand alone router. The truth is, the “G” has only 8MB of RAM… only half the amount of the more popular WRT54GL. I regularly experienced “drop-outs” and “lock-outs”, and rebooting was a nightly, sometimes hourly occurence.
Enter the Asus RT-N16.
Despite being under $90, the Asus RT-N16 it packs a lot of features. It has 128MB of ram, USB ports, b/g/n, and more. It is supported by DD-WRT, and has an excellent reputation on NewEgg. Here are the details.
Set-up was a breeze. I took it straight from the box and flashed it with the recommended DD-WRT build, which took a little over half an hour following these easy instructions. I then set up the wifi and other settings and swapped it in for the old Linksys. It’s already working great! It has had no problem maintaining connections from several devices while streaming Netflix on yet another.
